New endorsement gives classic VW owners greater clarity during summer events and stop-offs
With much of the UK enjoying soaring temperatures this summer, classic Volkswagen convertible owners are making the most of open-top motoring. Whether it’s a trip to a local VW show, a club run or a weekend cruise, there’s nothing quite like driving a classic with the roof folded away.
But one question regularly crops up among enthusiasts: can you leave a classic convertible with the roof down at a show?
It’s a scenario many owners will recognise. You arrive at an event on a sunny day, park up among fellow enthusiasts and naturally want to leave the car exactly as it was driven there. However, insurance policy wording hasn’t always made it clear where owners stand when leaving a convertible unattended with the roof down.
That’s why the VolksWorld Insurance scheme has introduced updated policy wording designed to provide clearer guidance and better reflect the way classic Volkswagens are actually used.

New convertible insurance wording for classic VW owners
Following feedback from policyholders, the VolksWorld Insurance scheme has worked with insurers to introduce a revised endorsement covering convertible vehicles.
The new wording, known as Endorsement 311, replaces the previous position and provides greater clarity around situations where a convertible may be left with its roof down.
Under the revised endorsement, cover applies when:
- The vehicle is being used for a show, event or temporary stop away from home.
- The policyholder or named driver remains within 500 metres of the vehicle.
- The vehicle is left unattended for no more than 30 minutes.
While it may appear to be a small amendment, it addresses one of the most frequently discussed areas of classic convertible insurance and removes much of the uncertainty that previously existed.

Why classic convertible insurance needs to reflect real-world use
Classic Volkswagens are often at the heart of a thriving social scene. From local club meets and concours events to weekend road trips and national shows, owners regularly use their vehicles in ways that differ significantly from modern daily drivers.
As a result, specialist classic VW insurance needs to account for situations that enthusiasts encounter every season.
Leaving a convertible roof down while browsing trade stands, grabbing refreshments or chatting with fellow owners is a common part of the show experience. The updated VolksWorld Insurance wording acknowledges these real-world scenarios while still providing sensible conditions around vehicle security.
Specialist classic car insurance versus standard policies
One of the key advantages of specialist classic car insurance is that it can be tailored to the needs of enthusiasts rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Different countries often take very different views on convertible vehicle security. In Australia, for example, insurers typically expect unattended convertibles to be fully secured, with the roof raised and the vehicle locked whenever the owner moves away.
The revised VolksWorld Insurance endorsement takes a more practical approach for UK enthusiasts, recognising how classic cars are commonly used at shows and events throughout the season.

Greater peace of mind for summer show season
As the UK’s classic car calendar reaches its busiest period, the change should offer additional reassurance for owners of Beetles, Karmann Ghias, Cabriolets and other open-top Volkswagens.
More importantly, it demonstrates how specialist insurance schemes can evolve in response to feedback from the enthusiast community, helping ensure policy wording remains relevant, practical and easy to understand.
