Back in the late ’Seventies there was no shortage of stylish coupés from which to choose, as each manufacturer strived to grab a small slice of the market that Ford’s best-selling MkIII Capri dominated. Among this plethora was the Renault 15GTL, which was sold alongside the slightly restyled and marginally more expensive Renault 17.

The 15GTL, shown here in this 1978 all-model brochure, certainly offered good value in 1978 (by which time the design was seven years old) thanks to its competitive list price of £3601. This compared well with the MGB GT (£4037), Ford Capri 1.6S (£3916), Volkswagen Scirocco GLS (£4395) and Opel Manta DL (£3735), and yet the Renault 15 remained a rare sight in the UK.

Undeterred, Renault insisted that the 15GTL was a great buy: “Fun to drive and a pleasure to own, the Renault 15GTL has the power and performance of a sports car, yet is notably economical.”
