With strong results despite a surprise venue change, Iconic Auctioneers’ latest sale was an other successful outing. Here are some highlights

Following a last-minute venue change after severe weather forecasts forced the cancellation of the Race Retro event, Icon Auctioneers’ February sale took place not at Stoneleigh but at Silverstone Circuit.

Despite what was no doubt a formidable logistical operation, the sale went smoothly and as planned was split between competition cars on the Friday and collector’s cars on the Saturday. Of the latter, the high achiever was the £258,750 paid for a 300bhp ‘Restomod’ BMW E30 M3 created by Redux Leichtbau. This wasn’t the only lot to crest the £200k marker though, with another ’80s favourite, a 10,000-mile Peugeot 205 T16 selling for £227,250.

Meanwhile, buyers with budgets stretching only to the £100k mark still had plenty of choice: £103,500 bought a 2021 Jaguar Heritage 60 limited edition F-Type coupe and £137,250 a 71-mile Jaguar F-Type Project 7 while £139,500 was paid for a 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring manual and £123,750 secured a 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth complete with a recent £25,000 engine rebuild, with a BMW E46 M3 in rare CSL flavour making £136,125.

Slightly more affordable but still representing the top of the market were the 1179-mile Honda S2000 sold for £33,750 and a duo of Peugeot 205 GTI’s, both in 1.9 flavour and commanding £20,250 for a Sorrento Green example and a hefty £42,500 for a 6233-mile Miami Blue car. In fact the Peugeots made the £25,312 result for the 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI Zero Fighter look like great value against the £99,000 commanded by the Tommi Makinen ‘Monte Carlo’ version, while the £4500 Mk1 Mini from 1963 looked like a great project despite it needing some recommissioning.

Other lots which caught our attention were a Range Rover Classic in 400bhp 5.7-litre Chevy-powered Overfinch 570 S specification which sold for £42,750 and a 1968 Mk1 Escort looking like a period RS model but running 365bhp-worth of 2-litre Cosworth YB turbo power which sold for £39,250. Group Ed Wager was also rather taken with the Last Edition VW Beetle from 1978, one of the last German-built Beetles to be sold in the UK market, which sold for £9000.

  • A Japanese import last year, the £25,312 sale price of this example with Zero Fighter additions looked like great value against the near £100k commanded by the other Evo VI in the sale.
  • First-generation manual Honda NSX was originally a press car but seems to have survived unscathed to sell here for £74,750.
  • With just 6000 miles and in the coveted Miami Blue, this 1.9 model was the top of the 205 GTI tree which explains the £42,500 sale price.
  • Running a period Overfinch 5.7-litre Chevy V8 transplant, this Range Rover boasted some 400bhp and sold for £42,750.
  • No high-end sale is complete these days without a Sierra Cosworth and this unusually standard RS00 made £92,250.
