Two years or so after its foundation, WB & Sons’ sales continue to impress. Here are our highlights from its June auction

Just over two years have passed since WB & Sons held its maiden auction, and yet its regular auctions continue to surprise with varied consignments and strong results. Its June 8 sale was no exception, with close on 70 per cent of the entry list finding new homes and particularly robust performances from traditional classics.

Indeed, a 1949 Standard Vanguard set the tone early on, selling for £4687 against a £2000–3000 estimate. This was followed by a 1968 Triumph 1300 showing 70,000 miles, which again had a guide of £2000–3000 but managed to sell for £4578, plus a 1967 Wolseley Hornet that sold at the top end of its estimate for £6376. A 1965 Volkswagen Beetle in fetching two-tone cream and brown also impressed as it sold just above mid-guide for £9047, but the outstanding performances were reserved for blue ovals.

A 28,000-mile Ford Escort Ghia four-door saloon from 1975 proved to be a strong warm-up act when it sold for £12,250, but a 1959 Mk2 Ford Zodiac proved to be the headliner. A sister car to the record-breaking Ford Consul sold by WB & Sons a couple of years ago, it was arguably even better and soared past its £18,000–22,000 guide to make £26,432.

The older classics didn’t have it all their own way, however. A 1984 Mercedes 500 SEC from a deceased estate found a new home above its estimate for £9750, and a 2006-registered Rover 25 that had covered just 2400 miles from new beat its upper guide to sell for £7085. Somewhat sportier was a rare Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider from 1990, the all-blue edition selling for £12,535, while continuing the forced induction theme was a 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1, which sold mid-estimate at £27,250.

Skipping forward a few years, an Escort RS Cosworth that had been built in 2000 from brand-new parts including a ‘909’ motorsport shell sold for £47,415, while another rally legend in the shape of a sought-after Subaru Impreza P1 from 2001 changed hands for £34,880.

With other entries including three-wheelers from Bond and Reliant, plus a host of sub-£1000 bargains, this was a sale that had something for everyone. For the full list of results, head to wbandsons.com
