We recently came across an old newspaper cutting from 1978, on the back of which was this advert for the new Skoda Estelle range.
It’s a tatty old ad but well worth re-reading, thanks to its attempt at changing public perceptions about Skoda: ‘We’ve been asking people what they know about Skodas. Most of the things they think they know are wrong.’
For example, how could Skoda offer a brand new car from as little as £1699? The ad boasted that many components had remained ‘basically unaltered over the years’, which meant that ‘tooling costs have been modest’.
And Skoda was apparently also able to ‘buy raw materials a long way ahead, which helps us hold prices down’. So now you know…
