Popular MG Car Club event MGLive! cancelled for 2024 amid rising costs – although alternative MGCC events remain on the calendar
Another popular annual classic car event looks to have sadly fallen by the wayside. Following the recent news that Brighton Speed Trails is no more and Bromley Pageant will not take place in 2024, the MG Car Club has announced that it’s taken the decision to ‘rest’ its flagship Silvestone show, MGLive!
The event is steeped in history and has its roots back to 1951, running for 68 consecutive years until track resurfacing work forced its cancellation in 2019. Its return was delayed until 2022 due to the pandemic, and last year’s event was replaced by the MG & Triumph 100 event to celebrate the centenary of both marques.
The news of the cancellation comes on the back of the club’s decision to cease planning and arranging race meetings because of the increasingly serious financial risks involved, a move that was announced in October 2023. MGLive! has traditionally combined a static show with race activity, and though holding the event with only the non-race activities inside the Silverstone circuit was considered, it has been deemed unviable due to costs and a dearth of volunteers.
“It has been determined that such an event will not be viable for the club because of the continued rising cost of all services and hire charges for the weekend,” read the club’s statement. “That, combined with a number of key volunteers retiring from their key roles, the challenges of recruiting new volunteers, as well as the dwindling attendance numbers to many motorsport events, has regrettably meant there will be no MGLive! 2024 at Silverstone. The viability of a 2024 event has taken into account that half of the ticket sales for MG & Triumph 100 in 2023 were to Triumph club members. We deeply regret having to make this decision and appreciate your understanding.”
Alternative MGCC events in 2024 will include the South East Centenary event at Brooklands Museum on May 18-19, the Inter-Club international event at Malvern on June 28-30 and the Post Abingdon Weekender on August 3-4.
