Classics World joins cancer charity mileage challenge, taking to the German Autobahn network to maximise distance covered

At 3pm on Saturday October 19, five teams departed from Fareham on a driving challenge, aiming to cover the most miles in 24 hours while completing challenges set by Rich of the UPnDOWN YouTube channel, who set up and hosted the challenge throughout a concurrent livestream, all in an effort to garner as many donations from viewers as possible and raise funds for the Sophie’s Legacy cancer charity.

The challenge saw an eclectic mix of cars – comprising a Skoda Felicia, Citroën C5 Estate, Subaru Impreza Turbo, BYD Seal EV and our very own Mercedes W124 – employ different strategies, the Skoda, Subaru and Mercedes taking to Europe to maximise mileage on higher-speed motorways and Autobahns, while the C5 and BYD maximised their points scored by completing challenges in the UK.

The challenges had numerous requirements for photos and specifics, including capturing the team’s cars next to a football stadium, getting a pig into the car for a photo, driving into and on a racetrack, finding pre-2000 cars to snap en route and getting the cars into a dealership of the same brand with a picture taken with a salesperson.

The mandatory dropping off of a Sophie’s Legacy care package of food and supplies to hospitals with paediatric wards was completed by all, while distance covered equated to one point per mile driven – after 24 hours, Team Classics World had racked up the most, the W124 covering 1269 miles overall.

The 24-hour live streaming efforts from Rich and various team members throughout the challenge encouraged an impressive number of charity donations, amounting to over £18,700 raised for Sophie’s Legacy as we went to press.
