A Porsche 928 with a starring role in the 1980s classic film will be headline lot at Bonhams’ Quail Auction at Monterey Car Week on August 16

Bonhams is gearing up for a blockbuster auction at Monterey Car Week with this – one of three Porsche 928 models used during the filming of the classic Tom Cruise vehicle Risky Business, written and directed by Tom Brickman. A combination of Hollywood provenance and great condition means the car carries a £1,100,000–1,400,000 estimate.

The car in question was used for many principle shots during the film’s production, including the scene featuring the famous line “Porsche: there is no substitute” and preceding car chase. The same 928 was also used as a ‘fill car’ in wide shots – so its next owner can enjoy seeing their car in action in one of the most celebrated films of the 1980s.

It is also claimed that the car played an important role in Tom Cruise’s rise to fame as a hands-on action star, with the film’s producer Jon Avent suggesting that he taught the 20-year-old star how to ‘drive stick’ in the 928.

The 928 – a five-speed manual example – was originally finished in white but was repainted in Platinum Metallic for filming. It returned to its original white and passed through a number of owners in California before being discovered by documentarian Lewis Johnsen, whose journey to tracking down the car was told in his film The Quest for the RB928 (Risky Business 928).

The car has been presented for sale fresh from climate-controlled storage since 2021 and comes complete with extensive documentation to confirm its heritage. It’s set to go under the hammer at The Quail Auction from 11am PDT on Friday, 16 August at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel, California.
