PREVIEW: DT MATHEWSON, PICKERING, OCTOBER 27
As we’ve come to expect from Mathewsons, the October 27 sale sees the catalogue packed with an intriguing mix of traditional and modern classic lots. The first to catch our eye was a Volvo 164, the upmarket version of the 140-Series with an extended front end to accommodate the six-cylinder engine. A real rarity, this is a UK-supplied car showing just 52,000 miles and is estimated at £5500-£6500.
At the other end of the scale we have a Range Rover P38A in 4.6 HSE flavour which boasts a rust-free chassis thanks to spending many years in Spain. At £1500-£2000 it looks like a good way to snap up one of these forgotten Land Rovers which surely must have their day soon. Or if you fancy being a little left-field with your 4×4 choice, then what about a 1989 Mercedes G-Wagen? Details were scant as we went to press but the 300D certainly looks up together and comes with a current MoT.
A more traditional classic is the 1978 MGB Roadster in eyecatching Inca Yellow with wire wheels and a chrome bumper conversion, estimated at £8000-£9000.
One car which had us all tempted was a Mk2 Jaguar which comes in sought-after 3.8 form. The automatic box and rust bubbles visible around the sill may explain its £6500-£7500 estimate but Mk2 values remain strong and this could be a nice project.
Less challenging is the simple elegance of the Citroën 2CV and the October sale includes a choice of three 1980s examples ranging in estimate from £1200 to £3250. Elsewhere, you’ll find a rare locally-made Jowett, a Fiat X1/9, Rover SD1 and a Riley RM as well as a great-looking MGB GT Jubilee estimated at £4000-£5000.
We’ve picked a selection of highlights here but the full catalogue can be viewed at Mathewsons

Just one of three 2CVs in the sale, this 1988 Dolly is estimated at £2750 to £3250.
The Alfasud Sprint has almost disappeared from UK roads, this one having survived by living in Spain until last year. With a big history file and original service book, it’s estimated at £5000 plus.
Mercedes 300D G-Wagen comes with an MoT until June and makes an interesting alternative to a Range Rover.
Mk2 Jaguar 3.8 is intriguingly affordable at an estimated £6500-£7500 but comes with an automatic box and some rust issues in its MoT history…
Made just up the road in Bradford, this 1952 Jowett Javelin is estimated at £6000-£7000.
MGB Roadster is a ’78 car but with its wires and chrome bumpers offers the classic style for an estimated £8000-£9000.
If you’re going to take a punt on a P38A Range Rover then what better than one which has lived in Spain? Budget on £1500-£2000.
One for the brave, this 1953 Riley RM project is reckoned to be complete and is yours for an estimated £1250-£1750.
This bodykitted MGB described as an ‘Evolution’ and was built up in an RV8 style using a 1969 car and a carbed Rover V8 engine with five-speed Ford gearbox.
A much underrated TVR, this 290 runs the 2.9-litre Cologne V6 engine making it perhaps easier to live with than the savage V8 models. The 1991 car is estimated at £5000-£6000.
