The car is in the desirable colour combo of black, with black hood and tan leather interior. It has the 5-speed manual gearbox and Toyo Proxes on each corner, providing excellent feedback and grip. Everything electric works, including the power hood, which is brisk in operation and seals wind noise well. All electric windows work, the radio and heated seats function perfectly. On the whole, a superbly comfortable cruiser.
The car recently completed a trip from Peterborough to Scotland, the entire North Coast 500 and back again, proving the old girl’s long-distance ability. The car has just over 160,000 miles on the clock, but you’d be hard pressed to tell. The interior is in good condition, with the odd tatty bit, and bodywork is overall tidy, with solid arches, but could benefit from a good buff.
Mechanically, the gearchange is as good as a gearbox-under-engine Saab gets, the brakes are strong and responsive, and it retains weighty and direct steering feel. The engine appears to be losing oil, with the level slowly dropping over longer drives and a faint smell if driven hard. It isn’t burning any oil, however, with no blue smoke or any other signs of piston rings, etc. It doesn’t overheat and boost is progressive with its recently-refreshed hose setup.
This isn’t an immaculate, concourse Saab, but nor is it priced as such. We saw a car with 100k more miles, a weaker colour combo in our eyes and signs of arch rot for £3000, so this magazine star is something of a bargain! This solid, usable future classic is the perfect retro daily driver. We would encourage viewing in person.
