Using the word ‘ultimate’ in the same sentence as ‘Maxi’ might seem odd to those who don’t appreciate the appeal of British Leyland’s family hatch. But in this brochure extolling the virtues of the new HLS version, the British maker reckoned this might indeed “be called the ultimate Maxi.”
It was certainly well equipped, with twin carbs added to its 1750cc engine (boosting power to 91bhp), while inside you’d find a burr walnut dashboard, tinted glass and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Outside, the HLS was noted for its “matt black bars within the chrome grille” as well as its black-banded hubcaps and chrome exhaust tail pipe.
As BL said, “Like good wine, the successful Maxi has matured over the years and is still one of the most versatile cars on the road today.” In other words, it was getting on a bit, but at least it had a big boot…
