Back in the ’Sixties, it was common practice for any performance-hungry motorist to swap their car’s standard carburettor for a higher-performance equivalent, all in the hope of gaining a few extra horsepower and improved acceleration. And one of the biggest names in the business was The Zenith Carburettor Co Ltd., maker of the Stromberg CD range of carbs.
This particular advert was aimed at owners of Britain’s best-seller of the time, with the headline “Instant power-plus for your BMC 1100”. According to Zenith, “your 1100 can graduate to a new level of motoring”, with the Stromberg CD conversion kit ensuring “instant response” and “more aggressive performance … all in one step”.
It wasn’t just the 1100 that could benefit from a new Stromberg carb, however, as similar kits were also listed for the Morris Minor 1000, the Mini, the Riley Elf and Wolseley Hornet, the Cambridge and Oxford family, the MG Midget and Austin-Healey Sprite, as well as Triumph’s Vitesse and TR3, TR3A and TR4.
