Anglia Car Auctions’ two-day June sale saw plenty of bidders descend on its King’s Lynn headquarters, with an intriguing mix of bargain buys and estimate-smashing entries

ACA’s latest sale was nothing if not varied. A humble 1958 Hillman Minx De-Luxe set the tone early on when it soared past its £3000-£5000 estimate to settle on £9180, ahead of an altogether more luxurious 1996 Bentley Turbo R, which beat its upper guide by more than £2000 to make £10,152. The latter was one of no fewer than nine Bentleys in the sale, with other strong performers including a 1997 Azure Auto that sold for £44,550, and a 1995 Continental R that beat its upper estate at £36,450.

Elsewhere, low mileage was the order of the weekend. A 2002 Rover 25 IL showing just 6128 miles beat its guide to sell for £6480, with an older 216 GTi from 1990 that showed a mere 18,410 miles changing hands above estimate for £4860. In addition, a 2006 BMW 320Ci Convertible with 26,055 miles more than doubled its lower guide to make £10,088, and there were good performances among the impressive 26-strong contingent of Mercedes too. A 13,595-mile SL500 from 2003 easily beat its guide to sell for £21,600, but our favourite was a 1990 S124 300TE 4-Matic Estate, which had been subject to a speedo change and therefore had probably covered over 100,000 miles, but beat its £2500-£3500 estimate to achieve £8640.

Some of the bargains to be had included an Alfa Romeo 164 for £910, an MG TF 115 Sunstorm for a mere £710, a 2004 MG ZS for £100 more, and a 1989 Mk2 VW Polo Fox for £860. Projects were plentiful too, with £3888 changing hands for a 1972 Honda Z600, just £410 for a 1988 Range Rover, £2165 for a Mk1 Cortina with some interesting graffiti, and £910 for a BMW 1602 from 1974.

However, perhaps the most remarkable was a 1977 Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000 that had been garaged since 1989 and was literally falling to bits. It was offered with no reserve, but would change hands for a hefty £14,580 – nearly three times the £5734 achieved by a fellow Mk2 in the shape of a running and driving four-door 1.3L. A modern Mk5 RS2000 from 1992 also performed well, smashing its £7000 upper estimate to make £12,096, while older Blue Ovals to impress included a 1966 Cortina GT prepared for time trails, which sold for £21,816 against a £10,000-£12,000 guide.

With traditional Brits, modern classics and a few select oddballs also finding new homes, this was certainly a diverse sale. For the full list of results, see angliacarauctions.co.uk
