A pre-production MGB GT V8 and prototype Lotus Elan M100 are set to go under the hammer at Historics’ sale on July 20
A prototype of a British sports car will be joined by a pre-production example of an iconic British grand tourer when Historics hosts its next auction at its own Windsorview Lakes venue in Berkshire on July 20.
First up is an MGB GT V8, registered in February 1973 and of just 12 sent to selected police forces by British Leyland for operational evaluation.
The pre-production example underwent a major restoration in 2009–2013, with invoices totalling some £23,000. Presenting, unsurprisingly, in white with a navy interior, it comes with its the police sign and light on the roof, and the police radio is still fitted inside. It’s estimated at £23,000–28,000.
Perhaps even more notable is a Lotus Elan M100 prototype dating from 1986 – three years ahead of the launch of the production cars. Owned by former Lotus employee Mike Kimberly, and until recently hidden under a tarpaulin in a Cornwall barn, it’s very much as it would have been back in 1986 when it was revealed to Lotus board members.
The trim, panels and dash are all in very good order with some patina, but not showing much damage given its construction and years in storage. A piece of British sports car history that’s ideal for a collection, it carries a guide of £20,000–30,000 but is ultimately offered with no reserve.
Historics’ ‘Summer Serenade’ will see almost 200 entries go under the hammer. For a full preview, head to historics.co.uk
