Brightwells served up its usual array of interesting classics at its latest auction. Here’s some of what went under the hammer

The June classic auction at Brightwells was notable for having something of a Triumph flavour, the lots including both a 14,800-mile Dolomite and one of the nicest TR6s we’ve seen for a while. In the event, the Dolomite was bid up to £5000 in the sale against a £6000-£8000 estimate, while the TR6 attracted no less than 20 bids, the final winning one being £36,000. That’s big money for a BL-era Triumph and was closely followed by a really tidy-looking Stag with the less common manual box which made £21,755 against a £14,000-£18,000 estimate.

More ’70s fare included a 1974 Volkswagen Westfalia camper van, relatively rare in right-hand drive which made £8300 against its £8000 lower estimate, while a 1976-registered Cabron Bugatti Type 35 replica made an impressive £23,000 against a £6000-£8000 estimate and a cheeky-looking 1977 Fiat X1/9 sold for £4000.

Another ’70s contender looking like as if it came from an entirely different age was the Series 3 Land Rover, updated using modern Defender parts which sold for £4550 against a £4000 lower estimate.

  • Rarer these days than the classic 500, this 54,000-mile Fiat 126 BIS made £4501 which looked like good value when a previous owner had spent over £3000 on restoration work.
  • Showing just 39,000 miles, this Stag came with the manual overdrive box and had received much expenditure during long-term ownership including a Weber conversion. One of the nicer examples we’ve seen lately, it sold for £21,755
  • It’s rare to find a Dolomite with under 15,000 miles showing but this 1979 example had gone into storage at 12 years old and only emerged last year. As we went to press it had been bid to £5000.
  • Intriguing droptop Daimler oddity was originally a Paul Banham conversion of a 4.2-litre XJ-C. Offered at no reserve as an unfinished restoration, it sold for £7001.
  • Heritage-bodied TR6 was an original UK-spec car, lovingly restored and boasting many performance and handling upgrades to justify the £36,000 sale price.
  • TR7 was converted to V8 power by specialists Grinnall in 1988 at just 25,000 miles. It sold for £9150 against an estimated £8000.
  • Honest-looking Herald 13/60 was ripe for improvement but still made a great starter classic for someone with a winning bid of £3050.
  • Solid Fiat X1.9s are a rare sight and this one was all the better for being entirely standard. Looking good in a Ferrari red, it benefited from recent recommissioning by a specialist and sold for £4000.
  • Cabron’s use of Marina 1.8 running gear for its Type 35 replica would have had Ettore spinning in his grave but the convincing aluminium-bodied ‘Bugatti’ soared to a £23,000 result.
