The latest CCA sale on June 17 saw almost two million pounds’ worth of classics go under the hammer. Here are our highlights

The Classic Car Auctions (CCA) Summer Sale 2023 on June 17 comprised an impressive 183 lots ranging from three-wheelers to prestige brands. It proved to be a resounding success, too, with an excellent 88 per-cent sale rate generated a total of almost £2m.

Forming a major part of the catalogue was The Warwickshire Collection consisting of over 50 British and European classics, along with a selection of delightful children’s pedal cars. Amongst the stand-out lots came a 1957 Daimler Majestic, a 1971 Daimler Sovereign and a 1968 Daimler V8, all of which strongly exceeded their pre-sales estimates.

One of the major stars of the show was a screen-used Only Fools & Horses 1972 Reliant Regal Supervan III. Resplendent in its Trotters Independent Trading paint job, it was previously owned by the BBC’s John Mansfield, and is believed to be one of the original six Reliants from the popular 1980s TV sitcom. It was offered without reserve yet made nearly £20,000.

Fast Fords of the 1980s and 1990s continue to perform well at auction. A 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4×4 with only 55,000 miles on the clock was a super example of the legendary four-wheel drive performance saloon. It still sported its original stereo system with a period graphic equalizer, and sold for £39,375. Staying with Blue Ovals, a left-hand drive 1975 Ford Granada Coupe also did well, smashing its guide price of £1000–2000 to sell for £6188.

The sale also reflected to ever-increasing demand for Japanese modern classics, as evidenced by a JDM-spec 1993 Toyota Supra that was imported to the UK in 2006. It was estimated at £15,000–18,000, but went on to sell for £26,550. As for German prestige, we were impressed by a 1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Sportline Convertible that was running but needing some recommissioning. Guided at £1000–2,000, it sold for £9900.

“We are delighted with our Summer Sale,” said CCA’s Gary Dunne. “I was one of our largest ever one-day sales. There was a great vibe in the sales room on all three days and with 56 per cent of the winning bids coming from the floor it shows the strength of our live in-person auctions.”

  • This 1971 Daimler Sovereign Series 1 4.2-litre indicated just 28,259 miles, which was believed to be genuine. Part of The Warwickshire Collection, the car was guided at just £10,000-£12,000 but sold for £20,250.
  • A 'First Series' model from the opening year of production, the Panda 30 was never imported to the UK. Presented in very good condition, this rare 1981 car came complete with supporting paperwork. Now UK-registered, it made £4500.
  • This early facelift, one-owner 1.8 SDL Marina Estate was showing a belived genuine 51,523 miles. Part of the Warwickshire Collection, the Damask Red load lugger was reportedly restored in 1992 and sold for a very reasonable £2138.
  • This Mk3 VW Golf GTI was a remarkable find, with one-owner from new, 9116 miles on the odometer and a record of annual services. The Mystic Blue machine brought the hammer down at £16,031.
  • This Only Fools & Horses 1972 Reliant Regal Supervan III was previously owned by John Mansfield of the BBC and is though to be one of six examples used for the show. It was offered without reserve and sold for £19,350.
  • Fast Fords continue to prove popular. This Moonstone Blue 1990 Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 was described as being “predominantly original and with only 55,000 miles.” It was guided at £25,000-£30,000 but sold for £39,375 after generating lots of interest.
  • Imported to the UK in 2006, this 1993 Toyota Supra wore a Top Secret-style bodykit and boasted the coveted twin-turbocharged 326bhp 3-litre 2JZ-GTE straight-six engine. It smashed its £15,000-£18,000 estimate to sell for £26,550.
  • This California White 1970 Volvo 1800E was fitted with electronic and variable power steering, overdrive and a rare sunroof with sunshade. It easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £25,000-£30,000, selling for an impressive £38,250.
